Why Affirmations Fail & What To Do Instead

If you've been in the self-improvement environment long enough, you've likely heard about affirmations: positive statements meant to reinforce an improved reality. You may have come across techniques that involve post-it notes or daily repetitions of statements such as, "I am successful" or "I am attracting my perfect partner."

If you've worked with affirmations before, you might wonder about the value of such a exercises. Maybe you've tried working with affirmations before and felt the words to be empty or to have zero impact on the reality you hoped to change. This is quite common. To be honest, although part of the process, repetition alone isn't likely make much of a difference.

Why Affirmations Fail

Reason #1

Let's face it. No matter how much a person wants to win the gold medal, only one person in each event will. Attachment to that kind of specific outcome only serves the one whose destiny it is to win. But having a less defined outcome such as, "I feel like a winner no matter what happens" gives one a much greater chance at actually experiencing that reality. So the number one problem when it comes to why affirmations fail is the nature of the affirmation. If the outcome is more important than the feeling it brings, the desire is likely one born more of head than heart.

Reason #2

Even more importantly, many affirmation practices miss the fact that when scarcity lives in the body, deeply embedded in one's neurology, just repeating a positive phrase isn't going to be enough to create change. The habit will override the shift every time. Plus, there's a tendency to ignore signals from the body that say, "No, I don't believe this." Practitioners think pushing through what feels fake is more important than tuning into and investigating these deeper signals.

A Different Approach

Among other exercises, Money Without Fear offers a holistic affirmation process that helps one excavate the roots of scarcity. The practice allows one to accept wherever they may be in that process: initial resistance, the discomfort of pushing through, or the remembering to remember. By engaging the whole body, by observing sensation and voice, and by being playful, those deeply embedded knots of habit can untangle and line up in more coherent ways.
